Views from a 3rd grade classroom

Good Morning. This was taken from my classroom window with my phone. No photoshopping.

Another view

My window looks out towards the mountain to the east. A few weeks ago the sun would rise above the mountain before school started. It's now rising after school starts and I'm not getting the pictures that I did before.

School has been pretty busy most of the time. Learning to work with a new reading program is interesting. I love the program, but I wish that we had more time in the day to spend on many of the activities.

We've had some really foggy days when we didn't get any mail, because the planes won't fly. This is from my classroom window. We can't see the mountain.

We had a day when all of my students were here! I got some group pictures! This was before I had two students added to my class.

Funny face picture!

2014-2015 3rd grade class

One of the nice days that we had, Catherine (my roommate), and I took one of the Honda's and went out exploring on the beach.

The ropes lead to fishing nets.

A creek up near the top of the mountain.

Gambell from the other side of the Lake. I live way over there.

Chelsea, the kindergarten teacher, came over and watched movies with us. We watched Magic Mike, I think? She wanted practice cornrowing someone's hair. I was her victim, I mean... her experiment.

This is Irma. Her grandson went to the other side (of the mountain) and killed two seals for food. She met him on the beach to scrape the seal skins so she could use the skins to create mittens, gloves and hats. She told me that she learned skinning from her mother-in-law after she was married. She was really quick and it was amazing on how she skinned the blubber off the seal skin.

She had made Chelsea's gloves for her last year, and she made me a pair as well. These are all one piece of seal skin with only one seam, besides the seams in the thumbs. They are going to make my fingers so warm this winter! (Plus they are beautiful!)

We had a really bad lice outbreak in the village. Everyone is trying their best to make sure all the students and staff keep from getting it. The clinic has been here everyday checking everyone's hair that comes into the school. We even had a no school day while they cleaned the carpets and disinfected the school completely.

However, my "day off" turned out to be a day spent in the clinic. Chelsea had taken a walk outside the night before in the dark, and twisted her ankle pretty bad. She called me and I took her to the clinic and stayed there all day. The clinic is an interesting place. They are busy all day long. People coming and going all the time. One of the most interesting things is that they VTC with the doctors in Nome. On this day, the doctor on call was Dr. Pepper. No lie.

I also learned that there is a chart on what type of POO you have. I guess this is to help kids talk about when they aren't feeling well.

The next day Chelsea and I cooked and baked for Tammie's (Chelsea's roommate and the 4th grade teacher) birthday. We made cake and chili and invited the teaching staff to come over.

I bought ice cream. It was $19.99. I know. Expensive. But it was a PARTY! And because Ice Cream.

4 layer rainbow cake! Blue, Orange, Purple and Pink!

I purchased a Macbook Pro via the school district. This is my sticker I put on it.
Spiderman Hello Kitty, because she kicks ass.

I got a care package? (Not really, I had to pay my parents for the stuff they sent me!) But my mom put in some Halloween paper crafts for my students to put together, and she also made this cute banner for me! I hung it on my door. I need things for my wall tho. My walls are bare. I do have pictures in frames on my book shelves. But I need something for my walls. :(

Kelly's (my other roommate and the HS Sped teacher) cat Harley.

This was made by Catherine one night. It's brownies, cookie dough with no eggs, cool whip and chocolate sauce. For those stressful days when you can't make a trip to Nome.

The 1st grade teacher Suzanne has a super hero theme going on in her room. She has Thor!

One of my students being silly with peaches!

LOL!

Last time I was in Gambell, Eric and I kept bringing in one of the puppies in from outside for a while, feeding her, and then letting her go back outside. Stella ended up being one of my students puppies, and she just had puppies. I went to their house to visit, as well as see the puppies.

Little boy, just 2 days old.
I've been having my students work on vocabulary words a little bit more than the reading program asks for, but it's something they like to do. I make them look up the word in the dictionary in the back of the text book, write the word by the definition on the worksheet, and they have to write the page number they found the word on. We make it into a competition and they get Class Dojo points for getting it done. Depending on how many teams I have, depends on how many points they get for being 1st, 2nd, 3rd.

I like this picture. It shows him with his finger on the word, while he's looking at the paper to match up the definition.

We've been having low attendance due to the lice outbreak. Most of the students need to be cleared by the clinic before they can come to school, and some parents are keeping their students at home just in case. I miss all my students who haven't been in class, and I hope that they all come back soon!

This weekend was a training at our school. Several teachers came from Savoonga for either a writing, math or early elementary workshop. I took the math workshop, because my math skills are weak.
It was fun, I learned lots about what the new AMPs test is about. The most important thing was that the middle school math teacher from Savoonga ended up showing us a lot of tips and tricks with our Smartboards. I'm excited to take the time and get to work with the Smartboard more.

Last night we had several people over to watch movies and eat popcorn, it was a lot of fun. We watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Bridesmaids.

Then this morning I made waffles and bacon for Kelly, Catherine, Tammie, and Sherry (speech pathologist). It was yummy.

The leftover waffles that I froze for making in the toaster later!

Bacon!
Tuesday we head back to Unalakleet for 3? days of inservice training on Cengage (our reading program.) We don't know when we'll return, but per the travel calendar, they are sending some of the schools home on Thursday, so I'm hoping we'll be Friday morning!

Completed Classroom Pictures!

The Moon from last night.

Last night the moon came up over the mountain and was just gorgeous. The pictures don't do it justice. I love living out here.

These were taken with a Nikon D3200, with a 55mm-200mm lens. I swapped ISO's for some of the pictures. I didn't have my tripod, and it was COLD out. I am still working on figuring out my camera.
