I started my grand adventure to Alaska this morning at 6am. After frantically packing last night and wondering if I would have enough room for everything as well as still be under the 50 lbs weight limit. I made it with one bag being 49 lbs and the other being 30. Whew.
My mom took this picture before I went through security. It's the BEFORE Alaska picture.
I knew when I checked in that I had seat 7A. I knew that in seats 7B C and D were other interns, but I had no clue as to what they looked like. When the guys got there (C and D) I said, "You guys are going to the same place I am!" They looked at me strangely. Then B came and she's like "We're all going to the same place!" Apparently Kristina and I are both stalkers and looked at who else was on the reservation as we were. She went one better and googled us. I was amused, I would have googled them but I didn't think about it.
This is somewhere over Washington. I'm not sure where, but the flight went by really fast because Kristina and I talked most of the flight.
When we flew over Alaska there was a point where the water met the land and all of a sudden there were mountains. It was a pretty amazing sight.
Then all of a sudden the mountains ended.
Then we were on the bay before Anchorage.
This may look like dirt, but it's not. It's ice on the bay. I didn't know til someone on the plane said that.
Someone also on the plane said the Iditarod was cancelled when we were talking about seeing it while in flight. There is a serious lack of snow here, and they are saying it's questionable, but it's never been canceled before. I may or may not get to see any part of the race because I won't be in a town that it goes through. I could go to Nome for the end of the race, but I would have to find a place to stay and pay for plane tickets. I probably won't.
We arrived in Anchorage about 40 minutes early. This is a picture of the four of us who flew up together.
Kristina and the boys will be staying in Unalakleet.
After we got out bags this is on the way from the airport to the hotel. The mountains are right there. It's so very pretty here. I am honestly glad that I came.
We went back to the hotel where the three Unalakleet interns met with their principal and I rode with the HR guy and the Asst Superintendent to pick up the next two interns, one of which will be with me in Teller.
Sat around and talked with the guys from BSSD, and then three of us walked to Starbucks down the street. Came back and chatted with the other interns.
Went to dinner at The Peanut Factory. I got a cheeseburger this time. :) Met the next three interns. The last intern will get here pretty late tonight.
Now, sitting in the room getting ready for bed. Tomorrow we have to be up and at the hotel next door to meet the principals for BSSD, and then shopping and who knows what else!
