Going outside

Once you've lived in Alaska, you can never take for granted the amount of time it takes to get ready ever again. At home, I can just throw on a jacket, if at all, slip on shoes and there you go.

In Gambell, in order to go outside to the post office or the store, you have to get dressed. For me at least, that consists of thermal pants, jeans, snow pants, wool socks and my snow boots. Then a shirt, hoodie, my coat, my neck/face gator, snow goggles, gloves and a hat. Then I put the hat on, then my hoodie hat, and then sometimes my coat hat.

Most of the time I sit around the house in my thermal pants and shirt/hoodie. Then when I go to leave I have to put all the rest of the stuff on.

If I'm just walking to school, I don't put on my snow pants, because it's a quick walk. Although if I lived further than I do, I would probably have to wear my snow pants.

Yesterday I walked to the store and the post office. My goggles partially got frozen up on the walk. It was quite interesting.

While I was at the store someone offered to sell me a seal skin hat, she had two, but neither fit me and I didn't want to spend the money on something that didn't fit. They were pretty skins tho.

A friend of mine from high school sent me a care package. It's apparently been delivered to the school. I'm off to go and find out what it is!

Yesterday I got one from my parents, that contained lotion and hats because I lost my hat!

Care package from Breanna, mom and dad. Now to borrow a cake pan. :)

Bowhead whale. These are the whales that the Yu'pik villagers hunt. Because of the weird weather, maybe they will get one while I'm here.
Thanks Jessica!!!

Just got back from picking up Jessica's care package! Thank you! Chocolate and Mio! Beef jerky! And reusable heat packs!!! Thank you so much!

  1. If I hadn't worked for you that fateful Saturday so you could take your exam, you'd never be on the verge of freezing to death!! I sorta feel guilty ...

I appreciate your writing of your adventures; it's nice to live vicariously through you yet stay warm at the same time!!

  2. Thanks Chris! If you hadn't, then I wouldn't be a teacher! It's all your fault!

I'm not freezing to death! Today it's still sub-zero, but not as windy as the last week or so has been. But now I have some warmers!
